Creating my own website has not significantly changed my opinion on digital media culture. My views of digital media are the same before and after the creation of this website. I have never agreed or supported the immersion of digital media into our everyday lives. I believe media has more long term affects on our overall mental health. It does more harm than it does good and creating a website doesn’t change that view. If anything, creating a website showed me how easy it was to be a forerunner of digital media culture. Websites are created for free and anything can be added to them. There are no limitations to what people want to create. However, most people who create websites do it to promote a business. They yearn to be the gatekeepers of the culture rather than just a consumer. Anybody can be apart of digital media based on different motivations.
Perhaps if we were to participate in a social aspect of digital media, rather than a business aspect, my opinion would change. Creating a website individually doesn’t give a good perception of “the culture.” The lack of frequent traffic may show how confined the culture is. Only certain social applications such as Instagram and Twitter provide your post to be seen by a large amount of public eyes. Therefore, to effectively participate in digital media culture you need to be apart of these select few social networks sites. This inclusion can be limiting for the user.
